Default Tracking your workouts?

I used to be obsessive about keeping a log of what I did in the gym as to how many reps, how much weight on each machine. Now it seems I just wing it and build a routine on the fly. Once I have established a good group of exercises I will do the same ones for 2-6 weeks, every time I work out or work a specific body part.

How much tracking do you do of your actual workout and variations?

I'm like you--I've been pretty much just winging it lately. I still train hard, but don't bother with the training log because there's just not enough time usually. Once I get my act together and develop a daily schedule that actually works, I want to go back to my training log--it is motivating to see how far I've come.

I guess part of the reason why I stopped is I never really went back and did anything with it. IE I was not analyzing previous training in order to create new programs.

Since I just create new programs in my head I would just go based on my memory.

I have a notebook by my workout setup, so all I have to do between sets is jot down a few little details. I like to have it all written down so that I can track my improvement.

I don't really care to take the time to write it all down. I have sort of a mental record so that I know how much weight to use and what is a "benchmark", but I couldn't tell you what I was benching 6 months ago.

I actually pay a little short guy to follow me around and write it all down, and tell me how much to lift next time. I suggest a short guy and not a tall guy, since he stays out of the way better and he can fit into my trunk.

I have a large rock sitting in the shade beside my house, which I etch my daily focus of exercise into. The rock has become quite full though, so I'm considering importing some paper.

I haave a computer spreadsheet program called Microsoft Excell, and my computer is right by all of the workout equipment! All it takes is a few digit punches to have it all in.
