More than a minute or two and I end up getting bored. I usually just wait for a minute to pass, then start when the second hand reaches the top of the clock. Nice and even.
I think those guys at the gym rest so long just so that they can talk to their buddies and whatnot. For me, weightlifting isn't a social time. Therefore I only rest long enough to do well on the next set.
Most of my working out consists of doing various chores around our farm, so I just wait until there is another set of chores ready to do. It could be 30 seconds - it could be an hour.
I don't ever rest! I just hop on the treadmill and do a few sprints to try and stay geared up for what I do next. Resting is for the wimpiest workouters!
Wow Angus, for an 11 year old kid you're sure full of energy. I don't think I could sprint between sets and still be OK to do the next one. I guess you are just youthful.
Some days I'm just really tired out already, so I will rest up to 5 minutes between sets. I usually average at about 2 minutes though, depending on the rest of the people waiting to get on the machine I'm on.
