When are negative reps a good thing to use? I used to use them on arm curls a lot where my partner would basically force the weight back, but part of the movement always bothered me and concerned me about potential injury.
Is it something I should not be concernd about right now as I work myself back into the gym?
When I do negatives I make sure my muscles are warmed up and that I have a good spotter available. With negative training, there's going to usually be some extra muscle soreness. If you're just starting back up again in the gym you could just focus on basic training first.
What bothers you about negatives? Bad experience or something?
Negatives have been useful for me in the past, especially as far as mixing things up goes. I actually had a personal trainer at one point at the gym who really walked me through the different ways to train, and one of the ways was learning the negatives. I felt confident with it because the trainer really knew his stuff and he was an excellent spotter.
negatives are great but you should keep in mind that they cause a great deal of stress on your muscles so don't use them too often.i do the negatives aproximately once every 2 weeks
Yeah, like the guy above me said, you'll be sore after you do those. You shouldn't do them every workout, but its still a good idea every once in a while.
Negative reps can be a great addition to your workout. Once you start to get tired out, slow down. Lift them up really slowly and then lower them down just as slow. It's a great way to get some extra workout in.
My theory is that if you fail at all before you reach the desired amount of reps, you should finish with a few negative reps. They aren't very straining on the muscles, but still provide good workout.
There is no reason to be so apprehensive about injury! I was once forced into a war camp and made to do negative reps for hours on end. I suffered great mental damage, but my muscles were intact afterwards.
All my life, I've been encouraged to do negative reps. I don't think they can hurt at all, and from what I've read in this thread they seem like an awesome addition to a workout.
I don't think theres anyone who DOESN'T do negative reps. I always thought they were just an integral part of everyones exercise. They're great! Do them!
