Default Free Weights

I like my free weights, but can't afford to buy a ton of dumbbells. I'm using a pair right now that uses adjustable plates. It's annoying to have to unscrew the ends every time I want to change the weight. Has anyone tried those square dumbbells where you can switch weight easily? They're called powerblocks, I think.

I have not seen those, but might be interesting. I agree the dumb-bell exchange is a whip. It really limits the kind of quick workouts at home I can do. I am going to buy a second set of dumbbells so I can at least increase my overall productivity when I am doing these at home.

Would be interested more in this quick-change blocks.

I also saw a pair of weights similar to Powerblocks at Target yesterday. They're by Reebox. It was frustrating; I couldn't test them out because they were tied to the box and there wasn't a price on the box. Each dumbbell only could hold up to 12.5 lbs anyway.

I might check out Sears or MC Sports if they have the Powerblocks or something similar. I'd rather just go back to the shop where I buy most of my equipment (that's where I first saw the Powerblocks), but they've moved about 20 miles further out. With gas prices nowadays and an old truck....

Were the ones you found like this:

It looks like these are 25lbs of weight. Problem is they are not really cheap.

Yup, that's what they looked like. Too bad about the cost.

I wonder if gyms going out of business (or just upgrading their equipment) still sell their old weights to people 'off the street'? Eh, probably doesn't happen nowadays.

Actually I vaguely remember of a way to get old gym weights. Either when they go out of business or when they upgrade. Problem is seeing as how the gym world works, I suspect most get sold off to friends and the like.

Default a possibility for you...

In our town of San Diego I found a local shop that sells old/outdated gym equipment. It seems to be pretty reasonably priced. You would have to check out your own local stores, but hopefully you'll have some good luck.

Riggy, congrats on the finding that good deal.

There've been (atleast) three new gyms that have opened in my neighborhood. There used to be only this one small gym and now it's looking like it'll close because of all the competition. I guess it can't hurt to ask. Hopefully, the owner doesn't punch me out for asking.

I did find this site online that sells used equipment:

http://www.fitnessrush.com/used_strength_equipment.html

The problem with an online vendor is you have to deal with shipping and weights and exercise equipment or so heavy the shipping would be outrageous. So definately best to find a local vendor.

Has anyone tried out those new fangled contraptions that promise you a 'gym' in one small thing. I saw this infomercial for one, I forgot what it's called. There's this platform and two handles and you can work out continously?
